Quilt Sampler - Beginner's Quilting Class
Mondays starting: Sept 12, 19, 26, Oct 3, 10, 17 at 10:30 - 3:00 (includes 30min lunch)
Class Fee: $110.00 includes all 6 classes
Fabric Supplies:
All fabrics should be 100% cotton.
*1/2yd of Muslin for practice rotary cutting and stitching in the first class session
*3/4yd of a print for the Border and Binding, coordinate with the next colors
*1yd of Light colored fabric for the Block Background and Sashings
*1/2yd Dark fabric for a strong contrast with the light fabric in the blocks
*1/2yd of Accent fabric in the blocks (red is accent in sample)
*1 yard of muslin or fabric that coordinates with border fabric for the quilt back
*Cotton, cotton polyester blend, or low loft polyester batting at least 36" square. Important Tip: Select the border fabric first, then the other fabrics to coordinate with the colors in the border fabric. Solid, very small prints, or tone on tone fabrics are good choices for the blocks and background.
Other Needed Supplies:
- Sewing machine with power cord, foot pedal, 1/4" foot and other necessary supplies and instruction manual if the machine is new to you. Student must know how to thread the machine and adjust stitch length.

PREP WORK: Please come to class with the following Prep Work completed if you want to be able to go home with a completed purse. Bring a sack lunch for our noon break! : < ) The Store will be open at 9:30 so we can be ready to start sewing at 10am sharp. We should be able to get it completed in one day.
If you have any trouble with my directions for the Prep Work – call the Store and I will call you back, or get it cut out and I can help you in class with the rest of the directions.
A: Handles: Narrow Handles (Aprox. 5/8” wide)
Cut 1 - 2” X width of fabric (44”) Contrast Fabric Cut 1 - 1” X 38” wide Fusible Fleece
Optional: Wide Handles (Aprox. 1” wide)
Cut the fabric 3 ½” X width of fabric & cut your Fusible Fleece 1” wide
& fuse on the wrong side next to the fold. Continue with step 2.
Center & Fuse the Fusible Fleece to the wrong side of the Contrast Fabric.
Wrong sides together - fold in half lengthwise with a 1/4” that has no fleece turned onto the top of the Fusible Fleece & press. (I use a water spray to help hold crease.)
Now fold in half again with wrong sides in, spray with water & press. Make sure your edges are even.
Top Stitch 1/8” seam on both sides of the strap. I stitch the folded edge last. Set Aside!
B: Center Panels: (2 needed)
Cut 2 - 8” X 11” Cotton Fabric Cut 2 - 7” X 10” Fusible Fleece
Cut 2 - 8” X 11” Fusible Deco Bond/or Floriani Fusible Stabilizer
Center & Iron the Fusible Fleece onto the wrong side of the 8”X11” Cotton Fabric.
Iron the Fusible Deco Bond or Stabilizer on top of the Fleece.
Stipple your desired design to bond all three units together. Label & Set Aside!
NOTE: This is a perfect size purse to use your Aqu-fil stippling on your 11000 Janome! I cut my fabric to fit the square hoop and then filled it with the aqua-fil stippling – quick & easy! I still cut my fusible fleece and deco bond the required size centered & fused to the wrong size of the cotton fabric cut to fit in the square hoop.
C: Side Panels (4 needed)
Cut 4 – 3”X 11” Contrast Fabric Cut 4 – 2” X 10” Fusible Fleece
Cut 4 – 3” X 11” Fusible Deco Bond/or Floriani Fusible Stabilizer
Center & Iron the Fusible Fleece onto the wrong side of the 3” X 11” Contrast Fabric
Iron the Fusible Deco Bond or Stabilizer on top of the Fleece.
Stipple your desired design to bond all three units together. Label & Set Aside!
D: Outer Pocket (front)
Cut 1 - 7” X 8” Cotton Fabric Stippled or (you can Monogram this section if you wish – do before class) From this section cut a 1 ½” X 8” strip off the top of the 7” X 8” rectangle
Cut 1 - 6” X 7” Fusible Fleece
Cut 1 - 7” X 8” Deco Bond or Stabilizer
Cut 1 - 7” X 8” Cotton or Contrast Fabric (do not stipple)
Cut 2 - 8 ½” X 8” Contrast Fabric (do not stipple)
Cut fabrics, fusible fleece & Deco bond or stabilizer.
Center & fuse the fleece to the wrong side of the cotton fabric.
Fuse the Deco Bond or Stabilizer on top of the fleece.
Stipple entire block, or monogram or embroidery a design centered & about 1” from the top of the block.
Place all outer pocket pieces & 1- 7” zipper in a zip lock bag & label accordingly.
E. Hidden Pocket (back)
Cut 1 – 8” X 11” Contrast Fabric 1 - 7” Zipper
Place in zip lock bag and label accordingly.
F. Purse Lining & inside Lining Pocket
Cut 2 - 10 ½”tall X 12” wide Contrast Fabric (or the size of your finished front & back panels) Cut 1 – 6 ½” wide X 10” tall Cotton Fabric (inside pocket)
Cut 1 – 6 ½” wide X 4 ½” tall Deco Bond or Stabilizer.
Place in zip lock bag and label accordingly.

Prepare Before class:

Special Cutting Note: When cutting the small (2 1/2x 6 1/2) zip pocket from the 2 1/2"
strip of main fabric, cut this piece from the end of the strip with the white edge or lettering on it (trim off of course). Leave the nice looking selvage edge on the other end of the strip for the binding, trim the strip as directed in the instructions
If you want to sign up for the class and won't have time to pick up the pattern ahead of time, we can give you the fabric cutting sizes when you sign up so you can still get them cut before class.
